Edwin L. Sisam

Mr. Sisam was a founding member of Sisam & Associates, formerly Sisam, Smith & Buhr. Mr. Sisam has vast trial experience in both state and federal courts.  The majority of his practice has been concentrated in commercial litigation including class action litigation, employment and discrimination law, real estate, property law, financial and investment recovery, securities litigation/arbitration and insurance law.  Since 1987, Mr. Sisam has represented thousands of clients in state and federal court and in arbitration.  His primary practice areas have been in helping companies and individuals navigate complex matters. That include both providing legal advice as well as litigation.

Mr. Sisam and the Firm are well suited to represent both Plaintiffs and Defendant (Claimants and Respondents in arbitration) because they have represented both in litigation. Representing both plaintiffs and defendant provides a unique litigation advantage that continuously representing one side of the legal bar does not.

Mr. Sisam also has experience in representing clients in mediation and in arbitration and personally serves as an arbitrator/mediator. Throughout his practice he has represented thousands of clients in arbitration and mediation and has participated in over 500 mediation and arbitration. Mr. Sisam has also represented clients in NASD and FINRA arbitration. (NASD and FINRA were largely established to help investors resolve their disputes with their broker-dealer and/or their licensed securities sales person known as their registered representative.)  Mr. Sisam’s background of having represented both claimants and respondents makes him a preferred choice as an arbitrator or mediator.

Mr. Sisam has been a presenter at a number of CLE (continuing legal education) courses. He has taught CLE courses on securities litigation, federal and state evidentiary rules, and requirement for collecting attorney’s fee in class action litigation and on legal ethics issues.  He was a founding member of Res Ipsa Loquitur, an organization that provided CLE credits to Minnesota lawyers with emphasis on legal ethics.

Mr. Sisam has served as a past member of the Minnesota Lawyers Mutual Insurance Company Advisory Board and is a past member of the President’s Advisory Board of an insurance holding company.

Mr. Sisam graduated with a B.S. from Iowa State University; and in 1987 he obtained a Juris Doctorate  (J.D.) from William Mitchell College of Law St. Paul, Minnesota. He is licensed in the State of Minnesota an has been admitted to practice before the  United States Court of Appeals in the Eight Circuit and the Fifth Circuit.
